Nissan is thinking outside the box with its latest concept. The automaker recently revealed its latest futuristic electric concept, the Hyper Tourer, at the Japan Mobility Show on October 25, 2023. This design study depicts a boxy van with unique features such as autonomous driving technology, swiveling front seats, and LED floors.

Exterior Design

Styling is typical Nissan concept fare – it is a bronze-colored van. Love it or hate it, the design language of the vehicle will not leave enthusiasts indifferent. Minivans may no longer be as popular as they were during their 1980s and ‘90s heyday, but Nissan believes there is a place for them. Of course, it helps that the Hyper Tourer looks nothing like the relatively generic Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna vehicles on the road today. Instead, the Hyper Tourer boasts an exterior design that aims to convey a sense of comfort.

It features flat surfaces and contrasting sharp lines, resulting in an unusual and distinctive appearance. The van does away with traditional elements like door handles, grilles, and door mirrors. Instead, it incorporates a thin LED strip that separates the body’s two paint colors. In addition, the roof-integrated spoiler adds a touch of nostalgia reminiscent of Japanese vans from the 1990s.

Interior Styling

The electric vehicle’s luxury interior might be even more futuristic than the exterior. Nissan notes that the Hyper Tourer is “geared towards individuals who appreciate the finer things in life.” The cabin–the design of which was inspired by the Japanese concept of hospitality, omotenashi–is equipped with four fully reclining, captain-style leather chairs. Furthermore, catering to individuals who appreciate sophistication, the Hyper Tourer provides a spacious and sci-fi-like interior.

It showcases individual suspended seats connected by an arched center console. As a matter of fact, the LED panels in the floors create a floating sensation by displaying images of the sky and a riverbed. Moreover, traditional Japanese kumiko and koushi patterns influence the overhead console and lighting, adding a touch of cultural inspiration.

Futuristic Technology

Since the vehicle is only a concept at this point in time, little is known about its mechanical hardware. That said, the brand confirmed that the Hyper Tourer is powered by solid-state battery technology, which is not yet ready for production. In addition to being able to drive itself, the van comes with e-4ORCE all-wheel drive to help ensure the smoothest ride possible. As mentioned, the electric vehicle also features a high-capacity battery with a V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) technology that will let owners use it to power their home or office if necessary. Impressively, the concept incorporates artificial intelligence-powered software that monitors heart rate, brain waves, and breathing to adjust the music and ambient lighting according to the driver’s state.

Japan Mobility Show Demonstration

The Hyper Tourer concept was displayed alongside the Hyper Adventure and the Hyper Urban concepts at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo. It is significant to note that it is unclear if Nissan has any plans to assemble the Hyper Tourer or if the concept is simply a technical showcase. Of course, if Lexus’s new LM model indicates that there is a market for luxury minivans, it would be unsurprising to see it eventually go into production.
