In the evolving landscape of automotive safety, the 2023 Nissan Ariya stands out as a paragon of protection. On December 13, 2023, Nissan announced that the Ariya was awarded the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) 2023 Top Safety Pick+ designation. To secure the Top Safety Pick+ honor in the 2023 model year, the Nissan Ariya underwent rigorous testing, excelling in crucial areas.

The innovative electric mid-size SUV demonstrated exemplary performance in the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, updated side tests, and original moderate overlap front, earning a commendable “good” rating. Moreover, the Ariya sets a high standard by featuring acceptable or good headlights as a standard feature across all trims.

Nissan senior vice president of US sales, Michael Colleran, emphasized the admirable qualities the Ariya exhibits, stating, “Ariya represents the best of Nissan advanced engineering.” He added that receiving the top IIHS rating “gives customers added peace of mind when considering Ariya as their next vehicle.”

The Thorough Assessment

The achievement of the Ariya is grounded in its robust performance in several crash tests. A pivotal criterion for the Top Safety Pick+ award is the availability of a front crash prevention system that achieves advanced or superior ratings in daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations. The Ariya meets this requirement, underscoring its commitment to ensuring the safety of drivers and pedestrians alike.

It is worth noting that vehicles produced after March 2023 are eligible for the Top Safety Pick+ award, signifying the integration of enhanced safety features and standards. That said, the front crash prevention system in these later automobiles not only attains superior ratings in daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations, but also offers an optional secondary system that earns a superior daytime rating and an advanced nighttime rating.

An additional improvement contributing to the Ariya SUV’s safety profile involves adjustments made to the aim of the headlights in March of the 2023 model year. To clarify, the incorporation of LED projectors across all trims, rated as acceptable, replaces the prior marginal rating received by the headlights before the modifications. This upgrade ensures that the Ariya provides enhanced visibility, especially in low-light conditions, further cementing its position as a top-tier choice for safety-conscious customers.

Nissan’s Safety Portfolio

Central to the electric vehicle’s safety arsenal is the Nissan Safety Shield 360, a standard feature across all its models. This suite includes six active safety systems: Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, High Beam Assist, Blind Spot Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Rear Automatic Braking. Moreover, the Ariya is enhanced with  High Beam Assist and Intelligent Auto Headlights, ensuring optimal visibility in all driving conditions.

Enhancing driver safety and comfort, the Ariya provides an array of driver assistance technologies. ProPILOT Assist with Navi-link offers steering assistance and Intelligent Cruise Control for highway commutes. For drivers seeking a more hands-off experience, the available ProPILOT Assist 2.0 allows for hands-free driving under certain conditions. Additionally, the optional ProPILOT Park feature utilizes automated controls for acceleration, steering, gear shifting, and brakes, simplifying the parking process.

Nissan continues to cultivate the development of inventiveness in the automotive industry, daring to go where others are reluctant to travel.
