To commemorate National Vinyl Record Day on August 12, 2024, Nissan debuted a unique LP dubbed Driven by Electric Beats. This special-edition album, topped at 1,000 copies and priced at $23, emphasizes Lofi music influenced by morning and evening drives. The endeavor is a cooperative effort between Harold “HB” Burns and Dope Candi from Nissan’s Electric Beats program, a project advocating diversity in music production.

For context, the album endorses the National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM), the only museum committed to commending and maintaining genres inspired by Black musicians. Established in 2021 in Nashville, the organization has collaborated with Nissan on multiple cultural enterprises. That said, the LP is available online and in-store at NMAAM’s Amplify Store and The Groove Nashville.

Musical Harmony

The automaker’s return to the Lofi genre centers on renewing listeners’ contentment. Indeed, studies indicate that Lofi music likely benefits mental cognition enhances focus, and minimizes strain and worry. In an innovative move, each side of the vinyl ends with a locked groove containing an audio sample of the driving sound of Nissan’s all-electric Ariya. The tone produces a serene loop until stopped by the listener.

Moreover, the Driven by Electric Beats album integrates a zoetrope pattern that animates as it spins. The picture disc artwork presents a woman and man driving the Ariya, tapping their fingers and nodding their heads to the beats. As a result, this visual component ushers in an extra layer of interest for vinyl enthusiasts.

Details Surrounding the LP

The album contains two tracks: Electric Dawn and Nightscape. As alluded to by the titles, the purpose of Electric Dawn is to invigorate listeners at the start of the day. Nightscape, on the other hand, provides a soothing atmosphere for lounging in the evening. In automotive terms, these tracks convey the two-fold nature of the Nissan Ariya – robust yet tranquil.

The brand’s strategy comes on the heels of its success with the Lofi Girl animated film. The four-hour video showcased a woman behind the wheel of an Ariya cruising through the Japanese-inspired countryside, seamlessly combining Lofi music with animation.

“In 2023 we had this incredible reaction to the Ariya Lofi Girl commercial. It was four hours long, but people kept coming back to watch it – over 18 million times! There were so many comments about how the music and animation had a calming effect. With the Driven by Electric Beats LP project, we wanted to support some fantastic initiatives but also provide vinyl fans with tracks they can turn to for a boost of concentration, motivation, or relaxation. That’s the amazing quality of music – the ability to bring us together and create positivity all around.”

–Marisstella Marinkovic, vice president and chief marketing officer, Nissan U.S.A.

The new vinyl setup magnifies the Lofi Girl notion by taking it from digital screens to physical form. It is worth noting that the Driven by Electric Beats album displays Nissan’s dedication to promoting cultural institutions such as the National Museum of African American Music while providing one-of-a-kind musical experiences. By blending technology and art, the manufacturer continues to highlight the significance of variety in music production via its Electric Beats project.
