A New Era for Nissan’s “Godzilla”: Electric

Nissan’s flagship GT-R sports car has certainly done its part in keeping the brand in enthusiasts’ minds over the years. Even though it is separated from the legendary Skyline family name, the twin-turbocharged, all-wheel-drive sports car generates mind-blowing performance that still stands against the fiercest of competition. Since the current GT-R launched in 2007, it has relied on a 3.8-liter, 24-valve, twin-turbo V-6 engine that accelerates up to 565 horsepower and delivers 467 pound-feet of torque. It remains hand-assembled and rumbles through a titanium exhaust system. 

Targeting Future Goals

There is a good possibility, though, that the upcoming Nissan GT-R R36 could be an electric vehicle. Prior to 1947, the future seemed undeniably gasoline-powered, but that year saw a completely different move by Nissan when the manufacturer unveiled its first fully electrified vehicle, a trend that would repeat with numerous inventive concept cars that resulted in the world’s first mass-produced electric vehicle, the Nissan Leaf. 

In 2023, through Nissan Ambition 2030, Nissan aims to expand the possibilities of mobility and society. Under its Ambition 2030 plan, the brand has invested $7.5 billion in electrification since 2010 and is prepared to double that amount by 2026 to satisfy the quickly shifting consumer needs. The plan aspires to provide experiences that inspire excitement and confidence. It seems this is the company’s new initiative related to its electrification strategy.

Electrification is a process that will take time to build and gain ground. While some enthusiasts might find the notion of an electric Godzilla ludicrous given its history as an internal combustion engine-powered behemoth, the popular Japanese magazine Best Car, claims the vehicle could accelerate up to 760 horsepower in an electric guise. As a matter of fact, reports emerging from Japan suggest that the new GT-R will be revealed by 2027 and most likely hit the market by 2028.

The Need for Solid-State Batteries

Nissan’s CEO Makoto Uchida stated that he is “confident that the first Nissan electric vehicle with solid-state battery will roll out of their factories by 2028.” If that is the case, it would be a tremendously advantageous development for the GT-R R36. It is worth noting that solid-state batteries will extensively enhance battery power technology. 

The solid-state batteries are said to be equipped with three times quicker charging speed, reaching an impressive 400 kilowatts. In addition, this battery technology is claimed to provide twice the energy density compared to the typical current range of lithium-ion batteries. Even more appealing for consumers on a budget is that this technology will decrease production costs by 50 percent compared to the current generation of lithium-ion batteries.

The GT-R R36 Sports Car’s Design Modifications

Other than being fully electric, Japanese car publication Best Car Web indicates that the next GT-R could encounter a new style language in the form of a four-door sports car. There is even the suggestion of a possible SUV trim in the works. A four-door configuration could make the automobile a much more pragmatic option, thus appealing to family-oriented consumers. The price tag could also be reduced, as a two-door car carries much sportier, assertive expectations than its four-door counterpart.

In line with exploring favorable opportunities, the restored collaboration between Renault and Nissan must also be considered. Both automakers are eager to strengthen the ties of the alliance, and that requires Nissan to invest in Ampere, an electric vehicle company headed by Renault. They will also work together on technology, marketing, and automobiles spanning Europe, Latin America, and India. The declaration made by the companies highlights the brands’ intentions to work in tandem to deal with the ongoing monumental changes that are occurring in a very competitive industry.
