Summary

  • Nissan representative is a fan of constructing an affordable electric sports car to compete with the Honda Prelude.
  • Although unofficial, a new Silvia would be located beneath the GT-R in the lineup.
  • Further indications of an upcoming electric GT-R.

The Nissan Silvia nameplate has existed since the mid-1960s on a series of delightful and legendary sports cars and coupes over the years, under several names and even the Datsun brand. Indeed, it is relatively surprising that there is not currently a Silvia on the market anywhere. However, that could soon change as a Nissan executive recently hinted at a return of the athletic coupe to something sized down the middle of the current crop of Nissan sports cars, the GT-R and Z. On July 22, 2024, an interview conducted by Top Gear addressed the prospect of future Nissan models and the Silvia’s potential return surfaced in the conversation.

Will the Nissan Silvia Return?

A Nissan official was asked if enthusiasts could ever see something like a Silvia sports car again.

“We cannot do these products regionally or as one-offs because it just doesn’t make sense. But there is a chance. It’ll be a challenge, but it’s my job to find ways to do stuff like this because I think it’ll be great for customers and the brand, and if I can put the right formula in place we could make it work.”

–Ivan Espinosa, Nissan Vice President of Global Product Strategy

Readers must keep in mind that the automaker is a business, and any new vehicle will have to conform with profitable results. That said, even though Espinosa’s statement is not confirmation that something is in development, it demonstrates the intention for an all-new Silvia from the man ideally positioned to make it happen.

An Up-to-Date Nissan Silvia

An even more prominent question is what a contemporary Silvia could be at this point. Nissan as a manufacturer has sworn off a future of combustion vehicles, pledging to invest in hybrid and eventually fully electric endeavors in the next couple of decades. That would mean consumers will not see any future gas engine production, so a Silvia needs to rely on an updated variant of what Nissan currently offers. It could also go fully electric by the time it eventually arrives to better suit newer brand values and promote new electric vehicle sales with identifiable and marketable Silvia branding.

As mentioned, the Silvia would likely be placed beneath the GT-R supercar. Nissan would most likely want to plant a Silvia in that location of the lineup to be certain it can yield premium or even luxury pricing to pay for development. On the other hand, the Silvia would have to be more modestly priced, with greater room and a less assertive disposition than the Z coupe. It would not be a far-fetched concept, as some later Silvia vehicles were decent-sized, four-place coupes.

The Meaningful Role of Solid-State Electric Batteries

The next-generation GT-R will likely have to wait for solid-state electric battery development said to be coming to production across the industry by 2030. That would afford better weight savings without sacrificing the output granted by an electric powertrain in a smaller supercar or sports car package. A Silvia would prosper from this same advancement along a similar timeline of development, so buyers should probably expect a new Silvia by 2035 if Nissan goes down the electric hypercar route.
