Nissan has its fair share of stupendous SUV models, but the manufacturer lags behind the competition. The Nissan Murano is one of the brand’s most athletic SUV offerings, and for the 2025 model year, a highly anticipated redesign is coming down the pipeline. Admittedly, the Murano was in a class of its own when it debuted in 2003, but modern-day rivals such as the Toyota Crown Signia and the Mazda CX-70 possess robust power plants and come from automakers with a more consistent reliability record. However, this article delves into how the 2025 Nissan Murano can make a considerable dent in Mazda and Toyota sales.

Is Nissan Coming Out With a New Murano?

To clarify, 2024 will be the final year of the current Nissan Murano. Much like Toyota’s 2025 redesign for the RAV4, the 2025 Nissan Murano promises to be thoroughly different. At this point, Nissan Murano 2024 sales account for 9,140 units in the first half of the year. In turn, the Toyota Highlander was sold 60,108 times during the same period.

That said, spy photographs suggest that the all-new Murano will be strongly influenced by the Nissan Ariya electric vehicle. Despite the inspiration, readers should not yet expect the introduction of a fully electric Nissan Murano. Nissan’s current engine options could, however, provide a hint of what to expect for the upcoming SUV.

Previous Engine Offerings

Nissan’s variable compression turbo engines were incredible in theory, but in practice, they resulted to be less competitive than anticipated. Indeed, the last year in which Nissan and Infiniti models featured variable compression engines was 2021.

One exception, though, is the Chinese version of the Nissan Pathfinder, presently relying on the 2.0-liter variable compression turbo engine. The automobile accelerates up to 252 horsepower and generates 277 pound-feet of torque.

Current Engine Offerings

It is worth noting that, as of this writing, nothing about the 2025 Nissan Murano is confirmed. Nonetheless, the Japanese brand is dependent on the VQ35 V-6 engine in several states of tune. For example, it is housed in models such as the Pathfinder and Maxima, so the naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6 is a fair bet.

The VR30DDTT engine is another potential V-6 to consider. For context, this sonorous engine was initially developed for the Infiniti Q50 and Q60 models. Later, it powered the retro-styled Nissan Z, where it produces over 400 horsepower in the Nismo Z. In the 2024 model year, the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 was also put to use in the full-size Infiniti SUV.

How the Nissan Murano Can Beat the Competition

Since the 2025 Nissan Murano will be vying for the top spot against models like the 300-plus-horsepower Mazda CX-70, the VR30DDTT engine would be an ideal choice. The new Nissan Murano might be accompanied by an Infiniti model, receiving the same platform. The Infiniti model might include different engine options. If that is the case, the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 could be reserved for the Infiniti while the Murano gets the naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6.

Going a step further, the 3.5-liter VQ35 could represent the base Murano engine, with roughly 284 horsepower, like in the Pathfinder. Upper level trims, on the other hand, would harness the potency of the 3.0-liter VR30DETT in different power levels, ranging from 300 to approximately 400 horsepower. Notably, Nissan discontinued the dull continuously variable transmission for its higher-tier trims.

Additionally, the 2025 Nissan Murano is rumored to boast a starting price tag of $37,000 MSRP (Plus destination fee), placing it in the $40,445 MSRP (Plus destination fee) range of the Mazda CX-70.
