Nissan has a long and storied legacy in electric mobility and motorsports. Set on displaying its state-of-the-art, zero-emissions electric vehicle technology in front of a global audience, the brand made its all-electric racing debut in Season 5 (2018/19) of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. It is the first and only Japanese automaker to participate in the series.

Electric Mobility: Looking Ahead

To that end, in a breakthrough study conducted by Nissan’s Formula E Team in partnership with OnePoll, the pursuits of the next generation for a sustainable future incorporating electric mobility were revealed on July 11, 2024. The survey collected insights from 6,000 individuals aged 8 to 16 across Japan, Mexico, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Italy, and the United States, underscoring an adamant desire among young people to battle climate change via electric vehicles.

What Does the “Department of Futures” Represent?

The findings of this study coalesce smoothly with Nissan Formula E Team’s most recent marketing campaign, “Department of Futures.” This captivating video, exhibited on Nissan and Nismo’s global social media channels, presents a group of quick-witted 7-10-year-olds posing complex questions about the future of electric vehicles to team drivers Sacha Fenestraz and Oliver Rowland, along with team principal Tommaso Volpe. The video ingeniously describes the core of the survey results, demonstrating the younger generation holding prominent team members responsible for guaranteeing the manufacturer’s commitment to its environmental pledges.

Over half of the surveyed youth conveyed an eagerness to drive electric cars to help protect the environment, with 68 percent highlighting the significance of combating climate change. The campaign successfully communicates these thoughts, emphasizing Nissan’s Ambition 2030 promise and the launch of 27 new electrified vehicles by the end of the decade.

“We realize the importance of providing the next generation with the tools to continue fighting climate change through electric mobility. The survey proves the desire of young people to help the environment through their choice of vehicles, so we know at Nissan Formula E Team that we have to continue developing important technologies. The ‘Department of Futures’ members know their stuff about electrification, and it’s our goal to make sure we help them enjoy a greener, better future.”

How to Better Electrification

It is worth noting that regardless of the enthusiasm, the study found that approximately half of the respondents are perplexed about what it means to be “eco-friendly” and only 30 percent believe they are currently kind to the environment. This data underlines the automaker’s duty as a pioneer in electrification to guide and inform the next generation in accepting and creating electric technologies.

Nissan’s unyielding endeavors to innovate in electric mobility indicate its dedication to a sustainable future, ensuring that the aims of today’s youth for a greener, cleaner world are fulfilled.
