The battle between midsize pickup trucks is growing. Even though most people are focusing on the all-new Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger, the Nissan Frontier is waiting in the wings. Soon, the 2025 Nissan Frontier will be prepared to strike. The Frontier was redesigned in 2021 for the 2022 model year, and it is due for a mid-cycle refresh for the 2025 model year. Meanwhile, spy photographers captured two camouflaged prototypes testing in the United States.

Aesthetic Tweaks

Pictured in Bluestone Pearl, the better-equipped prototype appears to be a combination of the SL and the rugged Pro-4X trim levels. Outfitted with all-terrain rubber, said pickup truck also flaunts a brawny wheel design not available on the outgoing 2024 Nissan Frontier. A new design for the radiator grille also needs to be mentioned.

In contrast, the Gun Metallic truck wears a bit more camouflage, yet Nissan could not conceal its new-for-2025 alloy wheels. Both vehicles sport heavy camouflage on the rear fascias, yet not much in the way of stylistic differences can be noticed from the photographs. While on the subject of exterior details, both pickups possess sliding rear windows.

As far as the cabin is concerned, sources speculate that a digital instrument cluster might be offered. As it stands, the Frontier features analog gauges in tandem with a small 7.0-inch screen in the gauge cluster. Even though it is highly possible, readers must bear in mind that the automaker is notorious for its aggressive cost-cutting measures. On the other hand, a digital instrument cluster would enable Nissan to develop a more technologically appealing midsize truck.

Technological Modifications

Customers could further expect a revised infotainment system. The most likely candidate would be the 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Google Built-In from the commercially successful Nissan Rogue. Speaking of which, the front-biased crossover SUV is available with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. By comparison, the Frontier offers a 7.0-inch screen in the gauge cluster and touchscreen display units measuring 8.0 and 9.0 inches.

From the standpoint of mechanical bits and pieces, no change is expected for the Frontier pickup’s standard 3.8-liter V-6 engine, currently offering a peak acceleration of 310 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque, placing it above the competing redesigned 2024 Ford Ranger, 2024 Toyota Tacoma, and 2024 Chevrolet Colorado. The Nissan Frontier is also exclusively paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, and towing capacity reaches a maximum of 6,640 pounds. Moreover, the vehicle sprints from zero to 60 miles per hour in approximately 7.8 seconds. Although speed is average for its segment, the Frontier boasts athletic handling and smooth transmission shifts to provide entertainment during daily commutes.

It is worth noting that even though the full-sized Titan faces discontinuation after the 2024 model year, experts at Nissan are reportedly engaged in assembling a one-ton electric pickup truck for North America with the help of Mitsubishi, though details are lacking at this time.
