OVERVIEW
- Nissan to discontinue GT-R with final pair of special editions: T-spec Takumi Edition and Skyline Edition
- This generation GT-R first appeared almost two decades ago
- Fewer than 200 units will be available in North America
The Nissan R35 GT-R made its official debut in 2007 at the Tokyo Motor Show, and the model is finally headed off into the sunset after 17 years. Nissan is not merely letting it fade out, though. The automaker is giving enthusiasts a pair of special edition models to bid farewell and look toward the future of the name.
What Makes the Nissan R35 GT-R Innovative?
When Nissan unveiled the GT-R, it was affectionately dubbed Godzilla, a fitting moniker for the monster with a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine that delivered 473 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. It had a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, and the track-ready beast could lap the German Nürburgring in under eight minutes.
Even though the car was not altered much, special editions and enhancements over time kept it relevant. For example, power output climbed, ending up at 562 horsepower and 467 pound-feet of torque, while lap times plummeted, and more supercars fell to the Nissan.
A Car Honoring Master Craftsmen
The first of Nissan’s two 2024 GT-R special editions is called the T-spec Takumi Edition. Takumi, in Japan, is utilized to describe a master craftsman who perfects their skill through years of practice and dedication. It is a word that is associated with someone who is at the top of their profession. At Nissan’s Yokohama plant, Takumi is designated to four men who are the sole assemblers of the GT-R VR38DETT engines.
The Takumi brings special touches such as red-etched writing on the engine badge, gold-painted 20-inch RAYS forged wheels, a gold VIN plate in the engine bay, and Nismo carbon ceramic brakes. Moreover, it comes outfitted with wider front fenders and Nismo-specific tuning for the Vehicle Dynamic Control system.
An elevated level of attention was also given to the color scheme. The T-spec cars will be finished in Midnight Purple, an iconic hue offered initially on the V-spec GT-R in 1999. The cabins will also receive Mori Green interior trim, another T-spec Takumi Edition exclusive.
A Car Exemplifying the Sky’s the Limit
Nissan’s second special edition is called the GT-R Skyline Edition, an homage to the skylines of Japan. Interestingly, this is the first time Nissan has officially put the Skyline name on the car in the United States. Based on the more upscale GT-R Premium, the car is painted in the legendary Bayside Blue shade that the brand retired after the R34 generation car until it was brought back for the 50th-anniversary edition in 2019. This special edition will also have a Sora Blue interior that is new for this vehicle.
It is worth noting that the T-spec Takumi Edition has a price tag of $151,090 MSRP (Plus destination fee), while the Skyline Edition is priced at $131,090 MSRP (Plus destination fee). Additionally, Nissan announced that fewer than 200 units will be available when the two models arrive at select U.S. Nissan dealers this summer (2024), and while that seems small, it is an ambitious target.
